Which is the southernmost active volcano on Earth?

Mount Erebus located on the Ross Island in Antarctica is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It stands at approximately 3,794 m (12,448 ft) above sea level making it the second highest volcano in Antarctica after Mount Sidley. Mount Sidley has an elevation of 4,285 m (14,058 ft).

There is a lava lake within its caldera, which makes the volcano even more interesting. The lake has been active since 1972.

The volcano was first discovered in 1841 by the British explorer Sir James Clark Ross. He named the volcano after his ship, HMS Erebus. Mount Erebus has been closely monitored by volcanologists because of high activity. McMurdo Station, one of the largest stations in Antarctica is located just 35 km (22 miles) away.
